About KND

Rebuilding lives through connection

KND Community Organisation supports people living with long-term illness or mental health challenges to rebuild confidence, connect with others and move towards meaningful activity or work — without being rushed.

Why KND exists

Too many people are left to recover alone

Living with a long-term illness or mental health condition can quietly shrink someone’s world. Work stops, routines fall away, friendships become harder to keep up, and confidence goes with them. Services are often separate — health in one place, employment support in another, community somewhere else — and people are expected to join the dots while they are at their most exhausted.

KND brings those pieces together. Peer support, practical wellbeing tools, volunteering and employment support sit side by side, so people can rebuild step by step, with others alongside them.

And when work is a goal, we believe returning should never come at the cost of someone’s health. That is why everything we do moves at the pace of the person we are supporting.

Mission and vision

Our mission

To rebuild lives through connection — not just services.

Our vision

A community where nobody has to face long-term illness or mental health challenges alone, and where returning to meaningful activity or work does not come at the cost of wellbeing.

What makes KND different

The principles behind our support

These shape every conversation, group and plan — and they are how you can hold us to account.
  1. Connection before services

Recovery is easier alongside people who understand. We start with a conversation and build from there, rather than fitting you into a programme.

  2. Your pace, your plan

Plans are flexible and written with you. Slowing down, pausing or changing direction is part of the process — never a failure.

  3. Work that doesn’t cost your health

For people who want to work, we focus on a return that is realistic and sustainable, with rest and adjustments built in.

  4. Honest about what we can do

KND is non-clinical and community-based. We are clear about our limits and will help you find specialist or urgent help when you need it.

  5. Lived experience matters

Peers and volunteers who have faced similar challenges bring understanding that can’t be taught — and helping others can be part of recovery, too.

  6. Families are part of the picture

Long-term illness affects the people around you. We recognise carers and family members and point them towards support.

Our support model

From first conversation to sustainable work

Five connected stages. Not everyone goes through all five, and there is no deadline to reach the next one.
  1. 1

    Warm connection

You talk with someone from KND about what is going on, what you would like to change and how your energy tends to vary. There is no long form and no judgement.

    Who’s involved
You and a member of the KND team. A family member or supporter can join if you would like.
    What comes next
Together you decide whether to put a simple plan in place — or just take away some information.
  2. 2

    Personal roadmap

You agree a plan that might combine peer groups, workshops, mentoring, skills training or employment support — whatever is most useful right now.

    Who’s involved
You and your KND contact. Carers and family members can be included where you would like them to be.
    What comes next
You choose one small, manageable first step.
  3. 3

    Gentle action

You start with something small — perhaps a workshop, a group or a short volunteering task. Activities are planned to reduce the risk of overdoing it.

    Who’s involved
You, your KND contact, and group facilitators or workshop leads.
    What comes next
When you feel ready, you add connection with others through peer or volunteer roles.
  4. 4

    Peer & volunteer support

You may join a buddy arrangement or an activity group, or take on a small volunteering role. Supporting others can bring purpose, structure and confidence.

    Who’s involved
You, peers, volunteers and KND staff.
    What comes next
If work is one of your goals, you start preparing for it together.
  5. 5

    Work transition

Employment support begins: exploring suitable roles, rebuilding workplace skills, preparing for employer conversations and planning a gradual transition.

    Who’s involved
You and KND’s employment support volunteers, including our Employment & Jobs Search Advisor.
    What comes next
A manageable start, with support available as you settle in.

Who we support

Adults rebuilding after long-term illness

  • People living with long-term physical conditions, including fatigue and pain-related conditions
  • People experiencing mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression or burnout
  • People who have been out of work and want to return in a sustainable way
  • Carers and family members looking for guidance

You don’t need a diagnosis to get in touch, and our support sits alongside — never instead of — care from your GP or health team.

Working with partners

We welcome conversations with health services, community organisations and employers who share our belief that recovery and work should go hand in hand — including organisations who would like to refer people to KND.
